Work Package 6: Intervention evaluation

Objectives

To evaluate the overall effectiveness of the interventions on reducing unwanted pregnancy and repeat abortion.

Description

This work package corresponds with the fourth research phase. The evaluations include:

  1. Evaluation of the effect of the interventions

The process and outcome of the proposed interventions will be evaluated between intervention and control groups by selected indicators. This evaluation will be conducted at two time points (within WP5):

  • At the time point of women come to the hospital for abortion.
  • Follow-up survey at/after six month of the abortion.

In addition, the registered data of abortions at the selected hospitals will be collected for a period of two months after the interventions end. The same checklist will be used as suggested in WP3. This will allow comparison of contraceptive use and abortion rate pre- and post-intervention.

  1. Evaluation of the health system determinants of effective implementation

It will be carried out over the study period, start from a situation analysis describing management and organization, capacity of and willingness to provide PAFP. Further analysis on the coverage and output of the integration approach will be conducted, which includes the number of women who have undergone abortion receiving PAFP services and their socio-economic characteristics, analysis on capacity building of delivering PAFP, quality of care as well as cost-effectiveness analysis.

Evaluation will be conducted at 3 levels including literature review, qualitative and quantitative studies.

  • A literature and document review will be conducted in WP2 to analyse the impact of family planning policy on the utilisation of healthcare
  • Two qualitative studies in WP 3 and WP 6

The quantitative study aims at mapping the current utilisation of abortion services in China. The data will be collected through a questionnaire survey, the annual hospital data registration as well as the available national data. One questionnaire will be developed for women and one questionnaire for health providers. They will be used in WP3 and WP6.
